Nearly 150 friends and supporters gathered to celebrate 5 talented young athletes who earned the first Dominic DePalma Memorial Scholarships.
Leadership from Beside
Dominic DePalma was a Broomfield High School Class of 2023 athlete who lived for his friends and loved his family. A passionate player and empathic teammate, he knew that leadership doesn’t always come from captains and coaches. Sometimes leadership comes from the unrecognized teammate who is leading while standing by your side.
Dominic's Reign
Dominic’s relentless reign on the pitch – and in his own life – came to a tragic end when a classmate (who had been partying prior to Dominic meeting up with him) found his judgment so impaired that he ran a red light at an intersection that involved an off-ramp of a busy highway.
Did the driver not see the red light? Did he think he could run it? That detail doesn’t matter.
What matters is that at the same time, a large semi-truck approached the intersection with the right-of-way and at the prescribed speed limit.
Because of a series of bad decisions, starting with procuring alcohol and marijuana, the classmate ended up killing Dominic, physically and permanently injuring two more friends, sending the fourth friend into forever mental anguish, and reliving nightmares himself that may never go away.
Aftermath
In the aftermath of this horrific night, we were left to struggle through the loss of Dominic, an incredible young man who was just about to start his senior year of high school. Family and friends established a fund to ensure that Dominic’s legacy continues, which is now supported by total strangers who believe in and support this legacy.
Earlier this year, Do It for Dominic D began accepting applications for its very first Dominic DePalma Memorial Scholarship. Applicants were asked to describe how they exemplify the characteristics that Dominic’s teammates, coaches and supporters loved most in him. How they:
- Dominate in their sport
- Lead from Beside
- Bring Humility and Grit to their game
